Red or White Wine For Thanksgiving?

We've all been to a dinner party where someone shows up with the "wrong" bottle of wine.  You know, when someone whispers and comments, "He brought red wine to a fondu party?"

Oh! No he didn't!!!

Thanksgiving is such a mixture of flavors, from savory dressing to sweet potato pie.  It's hard to nail down what kind wine works best with the pairings.

New World Wine Shop recommend the following varietals as crowd pleasers that match up well with most turkey and trimmings: Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Blended Whites, Zinfandel, Merlot and Blended Reds.
  • Portions – Figure that a 750-ml bottle has about six four-ounce servings. You do the math from here, taking into account predinner servings.
  • Varieties – Stick to fewer choices. One or two whites and reds will be easier all the way around. Offering a Sauvignon blanc, a Pinot Grigio, a Gewürztraminer, a Chardonnay, and a Riesling may be overkill. And when your guests are done sampling the different varietals, there may not be enough left of the favorite for dinner.
**Rule of thumb is to always have at least a bottle of red and a bottle of white, no matter what you are serving.  Some people simply do not drink red wine, and some whites.  So make sure your guests are taken care of and add some variety.

The holiday's are rapidly approaching! Friends and family will be "popping over" a little more freely and we want our well informed New World Wine Shop customers to be ready.  While there are much more extravagant spreads than this, we wanted to give you a crash course on wine and cheese appetizer spreads.

Why not add a new tradition to your Thanksgiving Day? Instead of those heavy appetizers that ruin your appetite for the main event, why not charm the elastic waist banded pants off your guests and have a little wine and cheese pairing about an hour before dinner? It's something to tide everyone over and make the nice transition to the dinner table.

If you need any help picking your wines, you sure know where to find us!

What a beautiful time of year! The trees are shedding their leaves, sweaters out out of storage, and fires are crackling.  There's no better way to capture the essence of the season then with a mug of mulled wine.

We especially like our mulled wine made with our Don Simon Sangria. Now available in our shop year round.

New World Mulled Wine Warmer
1-bottle Sangria
12-whole cloves
1-whole nutmeg cracked in pieces with a hammer
1/2 cup if sugar (optional)  our Sangria is naturally sweet so we don't add sugar but its a matter of taste
Zest of 2 oranges
Zest of 2 lemons
3/4 cup of fresh orange juice
2 cinnamon sticks
Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum pot
A crock-pot works great and you can keep your mulled wine warm for hours without worry
Heat just until steam begins to rise
Strain and return to pot
Serve warm
Ladle into heat proof goblets or mugs
Garnish with lemon and orange zest

Curl up and get cozy!
