Event #1 -- Unoaked Chardonnay WINNER: LaPlaya Unoaked Chardonnay COUNTRY: Chile A favorite coming into the Wine Olympics is the Chilean wine, LaPlaya Unoaked Chardonnay. We have introduced it before in a previous Buzz post and will continue to be huge fans of LaPlaya! Back Story: For those who aren’t familiar with the difference between unoaked and oaked, unoaked wine isn’t aged in barrels, it’s aged in steel. Oaked wine has a little more of a fuller, warmer flavor to it while unoaked is more crisp with more dominant hints of fruit. Oaked Chardonnay will also be a little more yellow in color, taking away more than just flavor from the oak barrels. If you tend to not like wines with a lot of oak, look into other parts of the world than say, California whites, which are known for being more “oaky” than other regions. ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT Chile isn’t known for sending big teams to the Olympics every four years, but there is a Marathon runner named Erika Olivera who deserves a mention for being forty years old and participating in her fourth consecutive trip to the Olympics. While a fourth showing at the games is impressive enough, Erika has five kids and plans on running for office to become a member of the Chilean Congress when she retires from running. WOW! Although Erika isn’t expected to medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, she is a winner in our book. That’s one ambitious woman! Erika will be running her event, the Olympic Marathon on Sunday August 14th. Like most Americans, we grew up watching and obsessing over the Summer Olympics, often wondering what it would be like to be the best in the world at something. While we never actually made to the Olympics, we have continued to watch and admire athletes from all over the world come together and compete for the coveted top spot of Olympic Gold. This year has been no exception when it comes to how much the Olympic games and the back stories of the athletes continue to inspire us. What better way to showcase wines from around the world than to introduce the New World Wine Shop Olympics! For the next week or so we are going to be awarding "the gold" in several different categories of wine. Every bottle of wine mentioned is available for purchase in the shop. Here are the official New World Wine Shop Olympic Events: WINNER ANNOUNCED! Chardonnay WINNER ANNOUNCED! Sauvignon Blanc WINNER ANNOUNCED! Malbec Needless to say, summer is here with a vengeance! It's the festive time of year when it's hot outside and nothing is more refreshing than a white wine spritzer! We added a little flair for this weekends patriotic events. Pour in the white wine and soda, and gently mix to combine. Serve with a few fruit pieces in each glass. Keep refrigerated until serving

Needless to say we have also enjoyed taking home a bottle for some "research" of our own. While we have made cocktails by mixing it with pink lemonade, shaking with ice, and pouring into a martini glass; guests have also tried it with grapefruit juice and orange juice. Perhaps our favorite way to drink it has been the flavorful rum by itself on the rocks -- allowing us to enjoy and appreciate the smooth and refreshing spirit one on one with our tastebuds. Plantation Pineapple Rum is created by infusing ripe Queen Victoria pineapples in rich, aged Plantation Original Dark Rum for 3 months. The pineapple rind (where the pineapple’s essential oil chiefly resides) was macerated in rum and then distilled, thus creating a bright pineapple essence to blend with the lushness of the infused Plantation rum. Below is a more complicated, but gorgeous recipe that combines Pineapple Rum and Ginger Beer. Stop out to New World Wine Shop and get your hands on a bottle before it's gone! This weekend marks the official beginning of summer at the lake! Summer to a lot of us means soft green grass under our feet, the smell of hot charcoal wafting through the back yard, and finally sitting down at the picnic table with perfectly grilled burger or chicken breast and the perfect glass of wine to go with it.
We have been dreaming of bold marinades, rubs, and sauces we want to try out. The fruit at the farmers market will be ripe and sweet, the veggies fresh and crisp. Potato, 3 bean, and 7 layer salads add color and tang to our overcrowded plate of delicious food. All of these wonderful flavors of summer can not only be enhanced by wine, but wine plays the role of a palate cleanser in the competition of summer seasonings. Check out the chart below for what wine is going to make your Memorial Day Weekend BBQ even better! |
